Burglars moving out of Whangarei's central and into the suburbs have prompted a police warning for home and car owners to properly secure their properties at all times.
At least five homes were burgled last weekend and most were not properly locked.
Sergeant Hayden Spence said judging from the recent spate of burglaries, it looked like burglars were moving out of areas such as Regent, Kamo and Kensington and into suburbs like Kamo and Raumanga.
"Make sure your houses are secure and if you're going away for a period of time, inform your neighbour and ensure your mail is cleared," Mr Spence said.
Apart from houses, he said four cars were interfered with in the Avenues over the weekend.
Most were smash and grab.
Cars along Central Ave, First Ave, Second Ave and Kauika Rd were targeted.
Mr Spence said owners should make sure their vehicles were locked and no valuables were lying around.
No one has been arrested in relation to these break-ins.
Two weeks ago, watchful neighbours helped police arrest two burglars who allegedly broke into a Maunu house and stole several items, including electronic gear and alcohol.
A neighbour saw the car being used by the thieves and called police immediately, who searched the area but could not locate the car.
Several hours later a patrol car spotted the wanted car and stopped it on Dent St.
Officers searched the car and found the items stolen.
Two people were arrested after four properties were searched and the stolen items recovered.
In 2013, 2688 burglaries were recorded in Northland, up from 2339 in 2012.
