The final count is out for the inaugural Whangarei Can and Coin collection, in support of the Salvation Army.
Whangarei district residents donated $8827.10 and over 4000 cans during last Saturday's event, organised by Whangarei Lions and sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson Whangarei.
"I think it's wonderful, the generosity of Whangarei, Northland, just blows me away," said Whangarei Lions member and co-organiser Jack Broome.
"It's the sort of stuff that keep volunteers going. People helping people - it keeps the whole community going."
Salvation Army director of community ministries Whangarei, Cathy Elkington, said the cans collected would make over 400 small food parcels for families in need. "It's brilliant".
