A cordon remains in place in central Whangarei as police continue with a homicide investigation.
Tarewa Rd has remained blocked since about 4am today after the body of a 21-year-old Whangarei female was discovered near the Waiarohia Stream.
Police were unsure how long the cordon would remain as they continued to gather evidence.
Detective Sergeant Dene Begbie said while the river was the primary area police were focussed on a number of other homes around the city were to be searched in relation to the death.
A team of 30 police worked on the case including officers who spent all day directing traffic through major intersections.
Police expected they would be able to name the woman tomorrow as they were waiting for formal identification and a post mortem examination to be completed.
Mr Begbie confirmed police were interviewing a Whangarei man and were not seeking anyone else.
Anyone who can help police should contact Mr Begbie at Whangarei police station on 09 430 4500.
