"We expect demand to be huge so get in early to secure your seats," Cr Innes said.
Whangarei District Council is investing $250,000 into the game, but expects an economic windfall for the district. Whangarei's hotels were already reporting they were booked out on the days surrounding the game.
The Lions last played in Whangarei in 1993, when Northlander and All Black lock Ian Jones played for the North Auckland side.
Northland Rugby Union acting chief executive Ali McGinn said there would be lots of engagement activities surrounding the tournament, particularly with local schools.
He said tickets had already gone on sale within the rugby community, to "great interest".
