Two Southland women killed after a head-on crash between their car and a logging truck at the Waitaki River bridge on Monday were Shirley Edna Wilson, 63, of Invercargill, the driver, and her sister Margaret Elaine Will, 64, of Mataura.
Ms Wilson was killed instantly and Ms Will died while being treated at the accident scene.
The sisters had travelled from Invercargill and Mataura on the morning of the accident.
Police would not release the name of the truck driver, but said he was a 40-year-old South Canterbury man. He suffered a cut to the face and knee injuries, was treated at Oamaru Hospital after the accident and discharged.
Transit New Zealand will review the collision site to see if changes need to be made.
Transit's coastal Otago area engineer, Murray Clarke, said although the bridge had no recent accident record involving vehicles, the roading authority reviewed the site of every fatal crash.
No complaints about the bridge or its approaches had been made.
