Former Fijian President Ratu Sir Kamasese Mara has been admitted to a New Zealand hospital suffering from what is understood to be heart failure.
Ratu Mara, who is in his 80s, was returning from a three week trip that took him to Honolulu and Japan.
He was admitted to hospital in Auckland yesterday.
His wife Adi Lady Lala Mara is on her way to Auckland to be at her husband's side.
His illness comes at a critical time for Fiji, with the Court of Appeal there considering whether to uphold the 1997 constitution that was thrown out by an interim military Government.
If the court decides the constitution is still legitimate, then Ratu Mara should be reinstated as the country's President.
