The first cricket test between New Zealand and the West Indies has ended in a draw at University Oval here today after showers forced play to be abandoned on final day without a ball being bowled.
Drizzle started falling an hour before the scheduled 11.30am start time and
intensified in the afternoon ending the match mercifully early at 2pm, just as the sun broke through.
The penultimate day yesterday was the first not to be affected by bad light or rain since the test started on Thursday.
Friday's play was also washed out while there was a more than three hour delay before play could resume on Saturday as the outfield dried out.
New Zealand were 44 for two in their second innings, an overall lead of 69, when stumps were drawn yesterday.
The West Indies had a 25-run deficit on the first innings when they were bowled out for 340 yesterday, Jerome Taylor top scoring with 106 - his maiden test and first class century. New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori took six for 56 to reach 50 wickets for the calendar year.
The second and final test starts at McLean Park in Napier on Friday.
