Election Candidate Profile: Allister Tosh (Future Youth Party)
Tukituki Electorate
It was a hard slog for Allister Tosh to gather the 500 signatures to establish his one-man Future Youth Party, driven by his desire to help the under-privileged.
Born in one of the Tomoana Cottages, which his family lived in after his father moved from Scotland and got a job at the Tomoana Freezing Works, the 47-year-old set the party up about two and a half years ago following a dream he had since he was very young, he said.
He was driven by a desire to create a more just and equal world for children to grow up in, he said.
"The world is in a volatile state and we need to get things sorted - if we don't we will be in a world of pain.
"Stephen Hawkins has predicted the earth only has 500 years left - we will never solve all the problems of the world but we can make it more comfortable for future generations.
"If we do not stand up and stand for something we'll fall for anything."
Although a challenging ask, he said he believed one of the main issues was the growing global population.
"I'm the only one in the world who has some of the answers to the plight of refugee crisis in the world."
He's not prepared, however, to disclose any of his policies or what he thinks will set things to rights because he doesn't want any of the other political parties to pick up on them - even though he said he'd been told people couldn't support him unless he told them his intentions.
"I'm hoping my charisma will pull me through."
He did reveal one policy and that would be to shut the door on immigration.
"We have a big enough population now to support ourselves as a country.
"We also need more transparency on the fiscal envelope - we need better economists to work out what's going on."
Even if he did not succeed this election, he believed you don't always get what you want on the first try and that perseverance would be needed.
Although concerned the outlook for the world was somewhat bleak, he said he was an optimist.
"I have to be, especially for the youth, for those young who don't feel like getting up in the morning, who don't feel they have a future."
