Hawke's Bay is not out of winter just yet - temperatures plummeted to 1 degree overnight.
A south-westerly flow lingering across the region caused the spring-like weather from last week to disappear yesterday.
MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said yesterday that the whole of the South Island and lower North Island was "basking in sun" but unfortunately for the east the southerly winds brought some cloud and showers especially about northern Hawke's Bay.
However, Mr Adams expected the southerly to ease and the rain to clear as winds would change direction and come from the north as the week went on.
"There will be some fine sunny days and any rain or cloud around on Wednesday should disappear on Thursday. It should then stay this way through the weekend."
The chilly 12C high yesterday, followed by low temperatures overnight, will slowly improve today with a high of 14C for Napier and 15C for Hastings.
As the northerly replaces the southerly the temperatures will rise again with a high of 16C forecast for both Napier and Hastings tomorrow.
Overnight temperatures will also improve but people can expect a couple of frosty mornings before things get better with an overnight low of 1C tonight for Napier and 0C for Hastings.
Tomorrow overnight temperatures reach 2C for both Hastings and Napier before rising to 6C on Friday with the northerly.
"If you're in the sun it will feel a lot more like spring as it will feel warmer but it will still feel cool when in the shade," Mr Adams said.
This was good news for Daffodil Day on Friday with the sun set to shine and temperatures expected to reach the mid-teens. People will be collecting money for the Cancer Society Hawke's Bay, where all money raised staysThe local towns are getting right behind the cause, with merchandise, buntings and super-sized daffodils planned to line the streets.
In Havelock North the central roundabout will be a Daffodil Day feature and the "cars with a twist" will be back on display.
Local businesses will also be creating their own window displays, and yellow buntings will be placed throughout the village.
The weekend was looking like the pick of the week with fine spells and a high of 17C for Hastings and Napier on Saturday and a high of 18C for Hastings and 17C for Napier on Sunday.
