Central Hawke's Bay Police are investigating a break-in at a Waipukurau bar.
The Farriers Arms in Northumberland St was broken into just after 5am this morning.
Constable Andy Walker said the offender smashed a window of the premises near Cervus Equipment's tractor sales and service premises to gain access to the building.
He said money along with cash register drawers were taken from inside the Farriers Arms safe.
A distinctive plastic cat, which was used to collect tips, was also stolen, and Mr Walker is asking the public to be on the lookout for it.
Mr Walker said camera footage from inside the Farriers Arms showed the offender was male, wearing a bandanna, a cap and a hood.
A crime scene unit from Hastings was called to the premises, and police were talking to neighbouring businesses.
Anyone with information can contact Mr Walker at the Waipukurau Police Station or call the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
