Lindisfarne College will be celebrating after one of its rowers had a podium finish at the AON 2017 Maadi Cup NZ Secondary Schools Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro last week.
The medal for the college came with a third place in the boys under 17 single sculls for Year 12 student Fergus Ritchie, who after first placings in his heat, quarter-final and semifinal and finished the A final in 7:50:16 to claim bronze.
The success follows on from a national title for Ritchie at the club nationals earlier this month.
Lindisfarne College director of sport Derek Martin said the college was very excited with the fantastic effort.
"They are talented students and they work very hard in their own time, training from 5am in the mornings before school. It's good to see them getting some recognition."
The rowing success comes in what Martin said has already been a great year for the school's sportsmen.
"We have only just started the school year and already we have excelled in rowing, hockey, kayaking and mountain biking. Nine of the school's top athletes have won ECNISSA titles and will be attending the NISSA championships later this year," he said.
"For a small school we punch well above our weight and it's something that, as a school, we are extremely proud of."
In the boys under 15 double sculls Frank May and Jake Lorkin came third in the B final, in a time of 7:52.15, placing putting them in 11th place nationally.
