Last Sunday's game was an example of the team's potential, according to Mr Meybaum.
The Hawks were drawing with the Canterbury Rams at fulltime but lost during overtime 99-87.
"That last period exposed us but I think it is a learning curve so next time we should know how to handle it better and until then we were doing really well."
Mr Meybaum said the number of people watching the game live was pretty small and hoped a few wins would pick the numbers back up.
"There were lots of people at the first game last season and then the numbers dropped off and I think that's going to happen again but I hope it doesn't."
The Hawks' number one fan said all he wanted to do was relive the day the local team took out the basketball league back in 2006.
He recalled cheering and clapping at the television as the basketballers walked away with the title in Auckland, beating the Auckland Stars 84-69.
"It was exciting and I was so proud as they played so well so I am sure we can do it again."
Mr Meybaum has created scrapbooks with pictures and newspaper clippings showing his favourite players such as Everard Bartlett and highlights including the national title win.
Alongside his scrapbooks he has a Hawks T-shirt which he hopes to upgrade this season.
"I have worn it so much it is a bit ripped now so I want to get a new one this year."
Mr Meybaum was heading to the game tomorrow if his cold cleared up and was excited for the season ahead.
"I just hope we get a couple more wins than last year but either way it is my favourite time of the year."
