Hawke's Bay Police are urging motorists to be extra vigilant in the face of continuing bad weather in the region.
The call comes after yesterday's crash on Waimarama Rd. Early indications are a combination of speed and the wet road are likely to have been contributing factors.
A 33 year old female is currently in the Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital with multiple injuries as a result of her vehicle leaving the road, crashing through a fence and ending up on its roof at the bottom of a thirty metre hill. She remains in a critical condition.
She was the only occupant of the vehicle and was able to summons help from a nearby farmer by repeatedly blasting on her horn. The farmer found her trapped in the vehicle and he telephoned emergency services from there and waited with the female until they arrived.
Given the nature of the crash she has been lucky to summon help in conditions where her health could easily have deteriorated in the cold.
The victim was extracted by firemen and once freed, was transported to hospital via the Lowe Walker Rescue Helicopter.
