The orchestra has about 35 members, with people from 13 nationalities taking part.
Mr Taylor became involved with the orchestra when his son, Joshua, 14, reached grade five with the clarinet.
He said it gives the musicians a chance to perform with others and hone their skills.
"Often they play on their own - sometimes it is good to be involved in a group. A piece of music needs many instruments to make it work so that is why we have to be part of a team."
This month's show is one of the main fundraising events for the orchestra, to provide members with a low annual fee of about $60.
The orchestra rehearses each Friday from 7-9pm during school terms at Hamilton Brass on Clyde St. It also runs several Sunday-afternoon workshops with professional tutors.
Players in the UYO are grade 5-6 and undergo a trial rehearsal or short audition.
Music director Yoshi Tatsumi and co-manager Steve Zhang are also crucial to the operation of the orchestra.
Mr Yoshi is foundation music director of UYO. Originally from Kobe, Japan, he studied brass performance, in particular the French horn, and spent 10 years with a civic wind orchestra in Tokyo training as a conductor.
Michael Torrance, 16, is the orchestra's leader and began playing the violin at age four. He was a member of the Waikato Schools Orchestra for three years, joining the UYO in 2010. There are currently vacancies for all instruments, especially lower strings and double reeds.
Entry to the show is by donation.
