Vancouver Whitecaps striker Masato Kudo fractured his jaw in an ugly collision against the Chicago Fire yesterday.
The Japanese forward collided with an on-rushing Fire goalkeeper Matt Lampson, taking a shoulder to the face before his head slammed on the turf.
With blood dripping from his mouth, Kudo stayed down on the turf for several minutes, but was able to get to his feet before being carted off the field.
Kudo was taken to hospital for further evaluation and the Whitecaps announced he had surgery overnight
"Apologies, well wishes and a speedy recovery to @masatokudo9," Lampson tweeted.
