It was steak for dinner for Windcliff Saint He Ain't after he was judged the country's top dog at the weekend.
The 2-year-old from Pukekohe, the first bearded collie to take the best in show award at the annual Pedigree National Dog Show, was also judged best working dog at the event's 46th outing, held in Porirua.
In all, 1500 dogs, representing 130 breeds, were entered in the competition.
Owner Jenny Watts said Windcliff, nicknamed Jackson, had been competing since he was four months old and was getting better all the time.
"He's a very get-up-and-go dog. He would do anything I asked him. He's got the most brilliant nature."
Windcliff's prize is a trip with his owners to the Pedigree Australian Dog Competition in Adelaide next year.
Another Auckland dog, Toledo Sam of Tentyne, a Sealyham terrier owned by Lorraine Tennet of Kaukapakapa, was named best terrier.
A team of dogs from the North Shore won the obedience section and the Wairarapa Wonder Dogs won the agility section.
