Christchurch police are concentrating on the gang aspect of last night's fatal drive-by shooting in Christchurch.
26 year-old Max Andrew Shannon died this morning in Christchurch Hospital.
Mr Shannon was shot from a passing car last night as he was about to drive off after finishing rugby league training in the suburb of Woolston.
His team-mates rushed to his aid, and were able to stabilise him until the ambulance service arrived to rush him to hospital.
Mr Shannon had gang connections and Detective Senior Sergeant John Ell says more than 35 officers are now involved in the homicide investigation.
He says they are searching a number of properties around Christchurch and are also interviewing friends, family, witnesses, Woolston residents and members of a number of different gangs today.
The police have also appealed for information about the vehicle the shots came from.
Mr Ell says shortly after the shooting a stolen Toyota Corona was set alight in a nearby industrial area, though police have not been able to connect it with the shooting.
