Southland's oldest surviving All Black, 86-year-old Ron Ward, died suddenly at his home in Invercargill yesterday.
Mr Ward played 33 games for Southland and coached the Southland team that lifted the Ranfurly Shield off Taranaki in 1959.
He played for the All Blacks in 1936 and 1937.
