All the Pokémon Go haters out there hoping to see the back of the franchise will have to keep waiting, as a new movie hopes to ride the wave of success.

Legendary Pictures, best known for blockbuster franchises The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim and Godzilla, has officially secured the rights to make a live-action movie based on the 20-year-old franchise, Deadline reported.

However, the site reports that despite its popularity Pokémon Go won't serve as inspiration, which is rumoured to be written by Chronicle's Max Landis.

Instead, the movie will be based on the Detective Pikachu game released earlier this year.

The game follows a talking Sherlock Holmes version of Pikachu that teams up with a young boy to investigate mysteries in the Pokémon world.

It has so far only been released in Japan with no release date for an English version yet.

The movie will go into production next year and will be distributed by Universal Studios, which has previously found success with small yellow animated critters through the Minions franchise.

It won't be the first time the Pokémon franchise has hit the big screen. There are 19 spin-off movies of the popular anime, with a 20th set for release next year. This week the anime will air it's 926th episode in Japan.

Pokémon is enjoying a second surge of popularity after the release of Pokémon Go earlier this month. The next game in the franchise, Sun and Moon, is set for release on November 18.
