So are they destined to become the first big hook-up of 2013?
Don't hold your breath. Holmes' rep has since harpooned the romance rumours.
"[It's] not at all true [that Holmes and Gyllenhaal] are secretly dating," the rep said in a statement to Gossip Cop.
"This story has not one ounce of truth," the rep echoed to E! News.
Jackson's rep also told the website, "There is no truth to any part of this story".
Holmes ended her five-year marriage to Cruise last year, and their divorce was finalised back in August. They share custody of six-year-old daughter, Suri.
'TOM SEEMED TO BE IN HIS OWN WORLD, COMPLETELY SMITTEN'
It was also recently suggested that Cruise has turned up the heat on his love life following the split.
Cruise was linked to 26-year-old New York restaurant manager Cynthia Jorge after the Jack Reacher star was spotted in a nightclub with her on December 18, according to In Touch magazine.
The mag claimed Cruise, 50, first met "brunette beauty" Jorge on December 16 at Beauty & Essex restaurant in NYC. Less than 24 hours later, the duo was supposedly on a hot date and enjoying an evening of dancing at NYC hotspot Le Baron.
"He was mesmerised by Cynthia," an eyewitness dished to the mag. "She had her hair in a bun, wore tight black pants and looked gorgeous."
The observant source continued: "At one point, they began grinding together. It was straight out of Dirty Dancing.
"Tom seemed to be in his own world, completely smitten."
But does a bout of dirty dancing mean Cruise is romancing?
Sources tell Us Weekly that the mag's report is way off the mark, describing the evening as "completely innocent".
"She met up with him after she got off work," the insider said. "She loves to dance, so they ended up meeting up later at Le Baron.
"He had a lot of friends with him. It was just a fun night out."
A source close to Cruise also told E! News: "He's single and will be talking to women - all of whom he won't be instantly dating."
And while we're on a rumour-busting roll...
Miranda Kerr recently sparked fresh Orlando Bloom split chatter after the Victoria's Secret model tweeted a pic of her left hand on New Year's Eve - sans her wedding bling.
Kerr posted the snap on her Instagram account, captioned, "Good morning xxx".
Needless to say, the rumour mill went into overdrive.
But a source quoted by E! News insists that the golden couple is not heading for a split.
"They're still together," says the source, while branding the breakup rumours "ridiculous".
Last month, the pair, who wed in July 2010, denied speculation that they were taking a break from their marriage after a US report claimed that the couple was "drifting apart".
It said: "Right now, they're separated and figuring out what they want to do next. They're not on the same page anymore."
But a rep for the pair denied their romance was on the rocks, telling The Sun: "They're spending the holidays together."
That they did. And they looked very much a happy couple when they were snapped out together (with baby Flynn in tow) on Boxing Day.
