Tranz Rail may mothball the main trunk line between Napier and Gisborne because it is losing money.
Tranz Rail senior executive Murray King told a meeting of East Coast mayors and politicians yesterday the line was losing money and the rail company was considering its future.
The East Coast's five mayors, Hawkes Bay Regional Council chairman Ross Bramwell and parliamentary representatives decided to write to Transport Minister Mark Gosche asking the Government to consider subsidising the line.
Napier List MP Anne Tolley said the Napier-Gisborne line was "marginal."
Gisborne Mayor John Clarke said the leaders would not let the rail link close without a fight. "We'll be approaching Mr Gosche and looking at what additional opportunities there are for rail freight," he said.
