Veteran French Polynesian leader Gaston Flosse has fought off pro-autonomy rivals to be re-elected in the Pacific Ocean territory.
Flosse, 69, a member of President Jacques Chirac's conservative RPR party, has held power for most of the past 20 years and was returned with an absolute majority despite recent convictions for graft and corruption.
The RPR won 28 out of 49 seats in the local assembly elections, which had been expanded by eight seats to accommodate population changes.
Nearest rival Oscar Temaru of the pro-autonomy Tavini Huiraatira party won 13 seats.
