A Mount Maunganui man is in hospital with two broken legs after trying to help a friend fix his car.

The 64-year-old man offered to fix his friends' car at a house on Oceanbeach Rd yesterday afternoon, a police communications spokeswoman said.

"He told his friend to put the car into drive and it came off the ramps and into him."

The man broke both his legs in the incident which happened about 3.30pm.

An officer who attended the scene the man was in good spirits, she said.

Tauranga Hospital confirmed a 64-year-old man was admitted to hospital on yesterday afternoon.

He had sustained moderate injuries and was in stable condition in the orthopaedic ward.
