A Tauranga man, who tried to strangle a female constable in the back of patrol car after he was arrested for assaulting another man, has been sentenced to five months home detention.
Te Rakai Bryan Felise, 22, who earlier pleaded guilty to charges of injuring with intent to injure and assault was also sentenced to 100 hours community work in Tauranga District Court today.
The attack on the police officer occurred on September 22 this year while the constable was working alone and was travelling back to the police station.
Officers in a patrol car travelling behind the female officer's vehicle came to her aid.
