"I am looking forward to starting my role with Rowing Australia and working with the entire staff and athlete group to progress the culture, technique and training components of the Australian men's rowing program," Wright said on the Rowing Australia website.
"I am excited by the opportunities that lie ahead and hope to play an important role with the sport of rowing in Australia over the coming years."
Starting a new Olympic cycle, Wright is one of several recent appointments with Rowing Australia taking on a new performance director and deputy.
"We are thrilled to have someone of Ian's calibre to lead our men's coaching team and newly established male centre," said chief executive Michael Scott.
"He brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge which will no doubt be reflected in our new look national program."
Wright had previously lived in Australia when he served as head coach and director at the Melbourne University Boat Club from 2005-2009.
He won bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympics with coxed four teammates George Keys, Greg Johnston, Chris White and Andrew Bird (cox).
Wright also claimed 1986 Commonwealth Games silver and bronze medals in men's coxless pairs and eights.
