The Manawatu-Wanganui team was still an outside contender for a semifinal spot entering yesterday morning's fifth round of the Toro NZ Women's Interprovincial at the Riverside Golf Club.
That team and Waikato were the only other squads to earn two wins from two meetings on Day 1 of the amateurmatchplay tournament, as Manawatu-Wanganui put away Aorangi South Canterbury 3.5-1.5, then Canterbury 3-2 in a polished display.
Castlecliff Golf Club's Amber-Rose Thompson-Newth was a standout at No3 in the order as she recorded two wins to get her side through on both occasions.
However, while Thompson-Newth continued her good form, Manawatu-Wanganui were beaten 3-2 by Waikato on Wednesday, before the bye that afternoon, which left them behind Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and Canterbury in Division 2.
The 14-team interprovincial features seven rounds of pool play ahead of the semifinals and final tomorrow.
