Wanganui Intermediate's Year 7 and 8 teams were both victorious at Supersport Netball Tournament in Masterton on Wednesday.

Intermediates from Wairarapa, Manawatu, Horowhenua and Whanganui compete in a variety of sports annually at this event, with the winning school receiving a banner for the year.

It is a real achievement for WIS to win two grades in the same event.

The Year 8 team played Palmerston North's St Peters College first up, winning 29-3.

They then beat Palmerston North's Ross Intermediate 29-11, before seeing off Monrad Intermediate (PN) in a much closer game 27-22.

Monrad led at both quarter and half-time and the scores were tied at the three-quarter break, before a real team effort saw WIS pull the match out in the final period.

They moved onto the semifinals and defeated Masterton Intermediate 30-7, which put them into the tournament final in a rematch of 2015 playoff with Feilding Intermediate, the defending champions.

Although the score was close throughout, this year WIS led at every quarter break - working well as a team and converting any turnovers into points to eventually win 23-19.

Players to star were shooters Sara Bishop and Heavenlee Peace Larkin, along with goal defenders Mattea Ale and Shylla Tahana-Hopkins, as well as centre Holly-Rae Mete, each working tirelessly in every game.

In their first time at Supersport, the WIS Year 7 team disposed of their opponents easily in pool play.

They beat Feilding Intermediate 13-6 , then Chanel College (Masterton) 30-9, and finally Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School 17-6.

They also played Masterton Intermediate in the semifinals, winning 27-8, to set up the final with Monrad Intermediate.

WIS worked well together and won 24-11.

Players to shine were GS Kitaana Tauri, who shot accurately all day, GD Maggie Jones, Honey Waitokia cover centre and wing defence, and GK Bianca Ross.

This squad would work hard to get intercepts and feed good ball to their shooters.
