Whanganui schools make mark

Hunter Gibson of Whanganui Intermediate was third in the Under 13 boys triathlon during the New Zealand Schools Championships.

Whanganui school athletes picked up several minor placings across the David Jones Suzuki New Zealand Schools Triathlon Championships on Thursday and Friday.

Whanganui Intermediate's Hunter Gibson had the best individual effort of the locals, coming third in the Under 13 boys triathlon on Thursday in 30m 5s, around 41s behind the winner.

His WIS schoolmate Danja Grunwald came fifth in the Under 12 girls triathlon (35m 26s), while WIS's Jessica Harding was fifth in yesterday's Under 12 girls aquathon (20m 51s).

In Thursday's team triathlon events, the Team HBJ squad from WIS was third in the Under 13 boys, while their schoolmates Team Dan were runnerup in the girls race, ahead of the Wanganui Collegiate Under 13 Blue, who came fourth.

Entering many teams, Collegiate placed very well amongst the grades.

Their Under 14 Blue squad was second in the Under 14 girls race, while the boys finished fifth.

WCS Under 16 were runnersup in the boys race, while Under 16 Blue were fourth in their girls event.

The WCS Under 19 F squad came fourth in the Under 19 girls race.
