Washed Up proved they were anything but as the Southern Trust Masters Games' basketball competition reached its climax at Springvale Stadium yesterday.
The team of former Tall Blacks Brendon Pongia and Dave Langrell, along with a handful of former NBL players with the Canterbury Rams, proved too strong for Wangaz- the hybrid Wanganui and Palmerston North team - in the gold medal match of the Men's 35+ grade.
Washed Up ran out 53-31 winners in the final match of the three-day schedule, finishing on top of the 10-team grade.
Earlier, Washed Up had beaten Naenae, while Wangaz accounted for Station United in the semifinals.
But claiming a 31-12 advantage early in the second half, Washed Up remained comfortably ahead, extending their advantage to 42-15 on the back of some good shooting from the three-point line.
Willing to try a few fancy bounced passes late in the piece to wind their tournament down, Washed Up were content although Wangaz never stopped trying to come at them, getting the last couple of shots to close the gap slightly.
In the other team sports, the weekend's wet weather has postponed the start of the cricket tournament at Victoria Park from yesterday until tomorrow morning.
