Under-16s squad has strong base to build on

The Wanganui Under-16s wrapped up their 2014 season at the Hurricanes' regional tournament in Napier this week.

A squad of 24 was taken to Tremain Field and included only two returnees from the 2013 Wanganui Under-16s.

They were beaten 35-22 first up against Poverty Bay on Monday afternoon, then rebounded to hammer East Coast 38-5 the next day.

After Wednesday's rest day, Wanganui finished their tournament with a 45-28 loss to Wairarapa Bush on Thursday morning.

Winger Harry Unsworth showed good form and was named in the tournament team.

Goal-kicker CJ Church had a decent week with the boot, averaging 11-14 points per game.

Coach John Church said second-five Calib Houlthan appeared to have a great future as a strong, hard runner.

Lock Chris Breuer was another standout, while the team was well led by captain Robert Lambert and last year's skipper Jack Hunter.

Six of the 2014 squad will still be eligible for Under-16s next year, creating a solid base to build on.

Church said he wished to thank the sponsors, parents and the WRFU for their assistance.
