The Ray White Wanganui under-12 rep side have won four of six matches at the Year 7 cricket tournament in Hawkes Bay.
The tournament was more about youth development rather than finding an overall winner, but at stumps Wanganui was one of the frontrunners.
The side dispatched Poverty Bay firstup by three wickets before going down by six wickets to Eastern Districts and Auckland-based Grafton by just 30 runs.
If any, Grafton would have been effective tournament winners and is was a particularly interesting match with Wanganui.
It was the fourth game of the tournament and Grafton batted first. In their 30 overs the scored 162/5 (Harry McVerry 1/24 and Daniel Austin 1/13). Wanganui tired hard, but excellent bowling restricted Wanganui to 132/5 in reply giving Grafton a win by 30 runs (Carter Hobbs 32 and Oscar McVerry 31).
Hobbs and Blake Hoskin had a memorable innings with the bat against Poverty Bay with half centuries each.
Nearing the tournament finish Wanganui bounced back to beat Dannevirke by 47 runs and finally Napier Tech in the last over by one wicket.
Wanganui ended the tournament with 4 wins out of 6 games. Carter Hobbs scored the second most runs in the tournament with 221 runs at an average of 73.67. He was also included in the tournament dream team batting at number 4. Oscar McVerry ended with most Wanganui wickets of 7 at an average of 15 runs apiece.
