Mt Ruapehu's Turoa ski field will host the climax of the GoPro Junior Freeride Tour in September as the top skiiers and snowboarders at Under 18 level compete for the national titles.

Round 1 of the three-event tour will be on The Remarkables in Queenstown this month, followed by the Mount Olympus Ski Area in the Southern Alps at the start of September.

The Turoa round is scheduled for September 23-26 - with one actual competition day and three contingency weather days set aside.

The skiiers and snowboarders with the most points in each category after the completion of the three rounds, will be crowned the overall NZJFT champions.

The Freeride tour was created in 2015 to provide New Zealand junior athletes with the opportunity to compete in professionally run competitions.

"This is a world-class event for young athletes, and attracts some of the best upcoming skiers and riders from around the country," said Bryan Cleaver, Turoa event co-ordinator.

"Turoa is very fortunate to host the Freeride Tour as it's such a great opportunity to showcase our country's athletes in Turoa's freeriding terrain." Registrations are still open for the tour.

Competitors will race within their age group, either 14 and under or 15-17 years, across each discipline.
