Raetihi Primary picked up the toughest school award at the inaugural running of the Waimarino Tough Kid challenge at the Raetihi Showgrounds on Friday.

Organised by Sport Whanganui staff, who had to travel up the long way through Waiouru, with State Highway 4 being closed, the day involved 220 children from eight schools making their way through the 1.5km obstacle course.

Events manager Rachel O'Connor said it was a great success.

"It was awesome to see so many schools from all across the Waimarino region - and further afield, in the case of Bainesse School - participating and having a great time.

"Overall, feedback from the schools was very positive and we will work with them to shape the event for 2016."
