The Wanganui Boys & Girls Gym club came away with a number of top placings from the seven teams competing at the Waikanae "Teamgym" display competition last Sunday.
Teamgym is a gymnastics group performance competition, which originated in Europe.
Consisting of six to 12 members, the team competes on vault, mini tramp, tumbling and a choreographed floor routine.
Wanganui head coach Kelly Taylor-Ward said the teams did well because the standard was high. They were in competition against clubs from Waikanae, Feilding, Onslow, Rimutaka, Capital and Harbour City.
In the open division, designed for adult gymnasts, Wanganui's Grease Lightning took the top spot ahead of Feilding, having come first in the spring, tumbling and floor events.
For youth competitors, Wanganui's Organised Chaos team came first overall in the senior division, winning the spring and tumble and coming second on the floor.
The intermediate division saw Red Sisters come second overall with runner-up placings on the floor, spring and tumble, while their clubmates, Salsa Sisters, were fifth equal with their best effort a fourth placing on the floor.
In the junior division, eight Mini Mimers were second overall coming runner-up on the floor and tumbling, plus a third placing on the vault. Two other Wanganui teams competed in the same grade, with Volcano Girls finishing fourth with their best being third on the floor, while Army Cadets were sixth.
"One of the highlights of the competition was seeing Liz Smith competing as part of the Grease Lightning team along with daughters Amelia and Rose," Taylor-Ward said.
The gymnasts are now training hard for their end-of-year function and prize-giving on December 14, where audience members will be treated to performances from every class at the gym club.
The club is also hosting their Viking Golf Tournament fundraiser this afternoon at the Durie Vale Rd course created by club supporters Jens and Karen Bukholt.
