The name Sorenson is a famous one in New Zealand softball and it might become well known in netball, too.
Mark and Jayne Sorenson's daughter Jaimee, 16, was goal shoot in the Hutt Valley team that reached the final of the North Island under-17 netball tournament in Wanganui this week.
North Harbour A won the final, 31-29. Although narrowly beaten, the Hutt Valley team this year achieved the Valley's best result in the 20-year-old tournament.
Mark Sorenson was a world class softballer, as was his father, David.
Mark was on hand in Wanganui to see Jaimee play in the final.
Jaimee said she used to play softball but was now concentrating on netball and swimming.
She said she began playing netball in her last year at primary school.
She first played for Hutt Valley last year.
She has received the benefit of tips from Irene Van Dyk on her style and technique and Irene has also given her drills to practice.
Jaimee said that, like all young netballers, she hoped to be a Silver Fern.
"I'm no different," she said.
Normally goal shoot for Hutt Valley, she is at goal attack for her club, Naenae Collegians. She also plays for her school, St Oran's College.
Jaimee said she trained about five times a week with her teams and three or four times a week on her own. She said her parents were fully behind her in everything she did.
Her favourite player was probably Belinda Colling.
"I like her style of play, very fast paced and skilful. Height is not everything. She can still do everything and not be the tallest player on court."
