The net was spread wide when the Wanganui Water Ski Club hosted the Central Region Championships at Lake Wiritoa at the weekend.

It was the first time that representatives from the entire Central Region have made it to Whanganui, with skiiers from Hawkes Bay and New Plymouth taking park, as well as the regulars from Wellington and everywhere in between.

In total there were 25 slalom competitors, 12 trick riders and three jumpers, with the final tallies decided after two rounds of each discipline.

Skiiers were trying to get good scores to add to their national ranking, with the New Zealand championships being held this coming weekend.

Wellington's John Gibbons is believed to have made a national record in trick for the Senior Men's 2 grade, pending confirmation.

As expected, the Meade family were among the best of the locals with Lily (girls), Brent (Under 21 men) and Simon (Senior Men 1) getting top scores in their divisions.

Nick Bakker had a good weekend in the Men's Division, across all three disciplines.
