IT IS rapidly becoming one of the busiest seasons for trips to the Wanganui judiciary and the union has had enough.

After 25 yellow cards were issued throughout the Tasman Tanning Premier and the senior grades by the end of April, the rot has continued unabated and virtually doubled since that time, and now includes a dozen red cards across all grades.

The red cards come from five premier players, four senior, a coach, and two schoolboys, although one of those received no further punishment as the red card was for repeated infringement.

The other schoolboy copped a three-week suspension for kicking, while the rest received a fortnight's stand-down.

The most serious suspension for 2015 was the 10 weeks given to Pirates' Uaealasi Taumaletua for abuse of a referee.

WRFU club development officer Paul Kenny said with six weekends remaining for the Premier and Senior competitions, the red cards had already doubled the six handed out for the entire 2014 season.

With 64 yellow cards handed out, this is also likely to overhaul the 90 in total given during last year.

Another judiciary hearing was being held last night for a player from one of the two Premier games played at Spriggens Park last Saturday.

The citing came from video evidence which allegedly shows the player kicking the head of his opposition.

Kenny could not identify the player or the team before the hearing as the charge was being contested.

However, he did say that if a guilty verdict was handed out then "at best, the guy's season will be nearly over"

The problems overshadow what would otherwise be a keen Saturday of Premier games with both of the major matches being potential semifinal previews.

After back-to-back wins lifted them into the Top 4, McCarthy's Transport Ruapehu travel to Memorial Park for a crucial match with top of the table PGG Wrightson/Balance Taihape, new holders of the Grand Hotel Challenge Shield.

Unbeaten since their narrow loss to Waverley Harvesting Border on Anzac Day, Taihape's 10-5 upset of shield holders Integrity Motors Pirates at Spriggens last week has just about locked in a home play-off.

However, Taihape are well aware that Ruapehu are much stronger than the team they beat 25-23 at Ohakune on April 18.

That was Taihape's first victory over their northern sub-union rivals in 24 games.

Ruapehu welcomed back inspirational Peter Rowe two weeks ago for the 25-14 mild upset win over Border up in Waverley, and kept the roll going, eventually, with the 13-0 win over Harvey Round Motors Ratana in Ohakune on Saturday.

Pirates' loss drops them back within striking distance of third-placed Border, although Border coach Ross Williams knows much more will be needed from his team than the last time they met - the 26-5 hammering at Spriggens on May 16.

"I sat through that video on Sunday, the worst 80 minutes of my life," he said.

His injured lock, Jack Hodges, also went on a scouting mission to the Pirates vs Taihape match and came back talking about teams who played "finals-like" in intensity.

"Understanding [Pirates] and stopping them are two different things," said Williams.

"[We need to] have a belief in our system, not be overawed by the occasion and play smart rugby."

Two key players missing from the Ruapehu loss, halfback Lindsay Horrocks and hooker Cole Baldwin, made welcome returns last weekend and helped Border to a massive 57-0 thumping of Wanganui Car Centre Kaierau.

While no Premier team likes to meet a Pirates side smarting from a loss, Williams has more personal concerns.

In his second season in charge of the South Taranaki team, Pirates are the only side he has not beaten.

"It does hurt a bit. It's a mental game at times."

In the other games, Utiku Old Boys are in desperation mode to get five points from their away game to Ratana, while Kaierau travel down the road to meet Dave Hoskin Carriers Marist at Spriggens Park.

It is the last round before another bye week for all teams on June 27.
