The Nine-Hole Tawhero Golf Club is swapping its traditional winter season to summer.
President Peter Granger said the switch was in part to help attract more members even though membership numbers probably exceeded those of other nine-hole clubs in the city.
"We have about 50, but most are retired peoplejust out for a leisurely game of golf once or twice a week," Granger said.
"New Zealand is probably one of the few countries in the world that traditionally plays the game in winter. The major tournaments are mostly in winter. Our season has traditionally run from April 1 to November 17 when we have our end of season gathering and play our Summer Cup, which is a pretty casual affair.
"We decided just recently to switch to a summer season and it will be a seamless transition, beginning on September 1 ... through to June 30. Our main competitions will run during that warmer period. While the switch happens this year we will still have our end of year function on November 17. Of course that's only this year that will happen. Next year our casual end of season tournament will be a Winter Cup."
Granger said members thought it made sense to play during the warmer summer months.
"We play every Tuesday and will continue to do that, but this year the course has virtually been unplayable at times with all the rain creating waterlogged fairways - the switch will hopefully rectify that," Granger said.
