The selectors have settled on the students who will make up the Whanganui Secondary Schools 5x2km relay teams during the upcoming NZSS Cross Country & Relay Championships in Christchurch.
The top three runners from each grade at last week's Whanganui championships were automatic considerations, with other names chosen on Mondayand confirmed later in the week.
Athletic's guru Alec McNab said Whanganui will be represented in five of the six relay grades.
"Collegiate is supplying the highest number of athletes with Whanganui High School, following their success at the Inter-Schools last week, supplying the second highest contingent."
Riley Zimmerman (City College) and Georgina Bryant (Nga Tawa) were also amongst the 26 athletes listed.
"Rebecca Baker [WHS] has been selected in the Senior Girls and will add strength to a competitive senior combination," said McNab.
Baker, 15, is still a Junior Girl but won the combined race against Senior Girls at the Whanganui championships, while Zimmerman and George Lambert have been moved up for similar reasons.
All selected athletics will run in the longer individual championship events on June 17, followed by the relays the following day.
Meanwhile, Collegiate gave their selected runners a work out by holding their school cross country yesterday.
Junior runner Liam Back again provided the standout performance with a fast time to dominate the Intermediate Boys.
"He ran through the 3km mark in just over nine minutes and held his form well through the final kilometre," said McNab.
Ashleigh Alabaster and older sister Caitlyn were the respective Junior and Senior Girls winners, with Caitlyn Alabaster being closely followed home by Sarah Lambert and Jane Lennox.
George Lambert repeated his win at the Whanganui championships schools by taking out the Juniors, while Ethan Gillespie was the Senior Boys winner after a tight battle with team mate Bruce Donald.
Grey House retained the House shield.
The Whanganui Secondary Schools relay teams are:
Year 9 Girls: Ashleigh Alabaster (Collegiate); Ana Brabyn (Collegiate); Maddison Gray (Collegiate); Lucy Brown (Collegiate); Margie Hazelhurst (Collegiate).
