The Sport Whanganui review of college sport in the region resumes this week focusing on Rangitikei College.
Rangitikei College School Cross Country
At the beginning of Term 2 Rangitikei College held its annual school cross country. Unlike previous years, this year featured the injection of obstacles including a mud pit,hay bales and water from a fire truck. All in all this was a great event that the students and staff enjoyed. Rangitikei College would like to thank Shane Gribbon and Greg Carlyon (BOT members) for their amazing support and assistance running this event.
"I have been involved with Football for over 10 years, I have been coaching/managing Rangitikei College 1st XI football team for the past two years."
What got you into coaching?
"I was approached by the school's sports coordinator and was asked if I was able to help with the Football team. I gladly accepted as my son has been involved in the sport since he was five."
Why do you coach and what do you enjoy most about it?
"I chose to coach so the Students of Rangitikei College did not miss out on playing. I enjoyed watching the students play and have fun on the field, it brought me great delight. Also the development of the students' skills."
What is your best advice you give to the team/athletes you coach?
"I was a student coach when I was at high school and have been coaching at Rangitikei College since I arrived last year."
What got you into coaching?
"One of the junior teams when I was at high school needed a coach so I thought why not give it a try. It's a great sport and the best way to build a team is to start with juniors and get them loving it and building up basic skills to prepare them for tougher competition at senior level."
Why do you coach and what do you enjoy most about it?
"I became a coach at Rangitikei College because I think canoe polo is a great sport and I really wanted to be able to offer the students something a bit different the usual sports available in schools. I enjoy getting to know the students in my team and seeing them develop their skills and confidence."
What is your best advice you give to the team/athletes you coach?
"My advice for my team would be to watch those paddle fouls! And to just enjoy it. When they are having fun and playing as a team they are fantastic on the water."
