Engine-revving and tyre-screeching action returns to Wanganui on Sunday for the Wanganui Road Rodders Club's 29th annual street drags.
High-powered cars and motorcycles from the lower North Island converge on the River City to be timed over an eighth of a mile of Taupo Quay.
Among the head turners willbe Wellingtonian Aaaron Thomas' twin turbocharged 1954 Ford Popular. The highly modified car gets its brute power from a 406 cubic inch Chev engine and has covered the quarter mile in 8.8 seconds, reaching a terminal speed of 244km/h.
Dean Scott (Wanganui) will be showing his supercharged Holden ute that has done the same run but topping out at 265km/h, covering the quarter in 8.4 seconds.
Scott's ute is one of the country's fastest street driven vehicles and is so powerful it's unlikely he'll be doing timed runs. But expect him to burn off some tread to please the crowd.
