The annual anniversary weekend women's pairs bowls tournament returns this Saturday with a name change to honour its founder.
It will be called the Shirley Cook Memorial Anniversary 3 Bowl Pairs Tournament. Shirley Cook started the women's tournament in 2000 and it has run every year since. She died in2012. "This year we thought we should honour Shirley and make sure her name was part of the tournament," Laird Park's Jack Kale said.
The inaugural tournament was held at the Laird Park club and moves around each year. This year it will be hosted by Laird Park Bowling Club and Gonville Women's Bowling Club.
"It's been a very popular tournament over several years now."
Forty two teams have entered the tournament with more than half from out of town.
The tournament will run on Saturday and Sunday with Monday a reserve day.
Laird Park vice-president Bernard Anderson said, "It coincides with everything going on in the city this weekend. People can come along and watch a good game of bowls."
