Opportunity has knocked for Whanganui motor race Aaron Marr and the door is adjar to an exciting future.
Marr had pulled the pin on his Formula Ford career earlier this year and was on the hunt for a new challenge with nothing specific in mind.
However, out of the bluejust two weeks back Marr was selected as one of Kiwi two drivers invited for a free test drive in an Australian Formula 4 race car. This test will be take place next Tuesday in Victoria, Australia prior to the September round of the V8's at Sandown. Father and No1 supporter Lloyd Marr said the Australian Formula 4 was a step up from the formula ford, being a wings and slicks class with double the horse power he is used to racing.
"Two weeks ago he got a call from Cams, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport, to be one of two up-and-comers to test drive a Formula 4," Marr senior said yesterday.
"It will be an opportunity for him to show his abilities to the professional motor racing fraternity in Australia and mix with some influential people."
Ironically, the 20-year-old Wanganui Toyota apprentice mechanic had taken a break from work and was holidaying in Queensland and was due to arrive back in Whanganui last night.
"He will be back at work tomorrow (today) and then fly out again to Victoria next Monday for the test drive on Tuesday," Lloyd Marr said.
Aaron ran a close second in the National Formula Ford Championship just gone after a bumper-to-bumper rivalry with eventual winner Michael Scott from Te Puke.
The championship was run over 18 races in six rounds with Scott finally nailing the title in the final race of the final round at Pukekohe last weekend.
During the entire 18-race series Scott and Marr were almost inseparable, which made for exciting racing lapped up by hungry supporters of the sport through the season.
On Formula Ford debut Marr finished third, was then fourth in the 2014/2015 season. "We sold the car and wre looking for a new challenge - something else to race," Lloyd Marr said.
"After two years of testing and learning this year's goal was to win the National Formula Ford Championship."
Unfortunately, that was not to be, but this opportunity opens doors to who knows where.
