Ohakune Primary School went one place better than 2015 as they were judged Toughest School at the second annual Waimarino Tough Kid challenge at the Raetihi Showgrounds on Friday.

Runners-up to Raetihi Primary last year, the Ohakune pupils had the best results on the 1.5km obstacle course across the boys' and girls' grades of Year 3-4 through to Year 7-8.

Five schools were represented amongst the place-getters in both individual and team races. Each competitor in the top three received a medal, and the Sport Whanganui Toughest School Trophy was awarded by the organisers Sport Whanganui to Ohakune. Raetihi were second and Ngakonui Valley School were third.

The Waimarino version of the Tough Kid challenge is the third area-specific event which Sport Whanganui puts on every year, having started with the inaugural Mitre 10 Mega Tough Kid event five years ago, and the Downs Group Rangitikei Tough Kid challenge four years ago.
