BULLS visitor Bryce Newman saved the best for last when winning the feature event of the day at the annual Whangaehu Horse Sports on Saturday.
The $250 winner-take-all Schimanski High Jump event proved an exciting contest as the metre-wide, metre-high bar was raised in increments of 5cm until there wasonly one clear rider and horse remaining.
Newman was out on his own clearing the bar at 1.40m on Bates Midnight Blue after an epic battle with David Wood on Burton who bowed out at 1.35m, while Chris Hoskings was third after clearing 1.05m on Toucan.
Committee member and sports convenor Lynette O'Leary said the day was busy, but successful with 160 horses and twice as many people turning up at the venue provided by Whangahu farmer Raymond Connors.
"Being a non-profit organisation we survive on generous donations made to the local community and school. Any other proceeds we make go to the Wanganui Riding for the Disabled who supply the stewards needed to run such a big event," O'Leary said.
"With all nine flat events well supported, a wide variety of riders are catered for from lead rein to recreational pleasure and show horses. A big thank you to all who donated and helped, including Raymond Connors for supplying the paddock," she said.
