Nerves on edge during penalty win

WE GOT IT: Olympic FC, the moment the winning goal was struck in their penalty shoot out with Taupo Great Lakers.

It does not get much more nerve-racking than a penalty shootout to finish off three days of action.

But that is precisely what happened at Wembley Park as the football module of the Southern Trust New Zealand Masters Games concluded yesterday.

The 35+ Men's gold medal between Wellington's Olympic FC and Taupo Great Lakers could not be split as both teams fought to a 0-0 stalemate.

Both sides missed with their opening two salvos of the best-of-five shootout, striking the posts - then Olympic connected with three straight, whereas Taupo could find the net only once.

It made a good finish for Wellington as Capital Hearts came third in the grade.

In 45+ Men's, the combine team Old Boys won gold, with Auckland's Hibiscus Coast silver and Wellington Stop Out bronze.

Wanganui's veterans in Athletic Cosmos won the Men's 50+, ahead of combined team ICPP and Palmerston North's Red Sox Legends.

In the 25+ Women's grade, Wanganui Women brought home gold, ahead of Wellington's Ladies Who Score and Palmerston North's Evergreens.

The golden boot winners for most goals went to Wanganui's Ella Wiebe, narrowly ahead of team mate Tanja Grunworld, along with Wairarapa's Darrin Hannah (Men's 45+), Olympic's Daryl Gibbs (Men's 35+) and Cosmos' Mark Goodier (Men's 50+).
