WELLINGTON players dominated the Slazenger Wanganui Junior Tennis Open this week, winning most of the age-group titles.

With local players ousted earlier in the week, No1 seed Milo Benn beat fellow Wellingtonian Jin Dassanayake 7-6 6-1 to take the 16-and-under title. Benn was one of the few top seeds to take a title.

He teamed with brother Satchel to be No1 seeds in the doubles final, but Dassanayake gained his revenge. He and Trent Young (Wellington), the No2 seeds, upset the favourites in a superb match. It was 2-6 6-1 before Dassanayake and Young took the super tiebreaker 10-4 to nail the title.

In the girls' 16-and-under final, fourth seed Maggie Dai (Wellington) beat No3-seeded Cantabrian Tessa McCann 6-4 6-1.

Dai then combined with Grace McLean (Wgtn) in the doubles but lost 6-3 6-1 to Meg Henderson (Wgtn) and Marie Reid (Kapi Mana).

The 12-and-under boys' singles final went to Wellingtonian Tom Bolton, who beat Wairarapa's Shane Colton 6-4 6-3. Bolton and Colton teamed up to win the doubles title, beating No3 seeds Nick Renton and Zino Varoushas-Poole (both Wellington) 6-0 6-2.

In the girls 12-and-under event, No2 seed Nikayla Barnard (Taranaki) beat No1 Claire Brownlie (Lower Hutt) 6-2 6-3. Barnard then claimed the doubles title with Ella Rogers, downing Olivia Cook and Claire Brownlie 6-3 7-6 in the final.

Tournament convener Gene Ridgway said it had been busy at the Bassett St courts with 295 matches, 599 sets and 4639 games played over four days.
