Maori elders to have own Olympics

About 200 of the region's Maori elders will have their own special sports event on June 18 at Jubilee Stadium.

Organised by Iwi, Maori healthcare providers and sport development organisations, this Taipahake - or Kaumatua Olympics - will be five hours of fun activities for those 60 years and older.

Sport Whanganui's Nicole Dryden said this event would be a first for Wanganui and was focused on the health benefits.

There will be a range of events including target games like darts, table top bowls, dance competitions and traditional Maori competitions such as the poi.

"It's gentle activity for kaumatua," said Dryden.

"It's to encourage our kaumatua to remain active and get out there and try things."

Entries have come from Taumarunui, Taihape and Bulls, as well as Wanganui. While designed for Maori elderly, the event is open to all those interested.

The event will start on June 18 with a whakatau, or welcome, followed by a parade before the games at 10am.

There will also be entertainment and a prize-giving.
