Hometown competitor Seamus Manson edged out his rivals on a borrowed machine to claim the inaugural Greg Coleman Memorial Dirt Rider of the Year trophy at the final round of the Wanganui Motorcycle Club's winter motocross championship, at Landguard Bluff on Sunday.
Going into the last round of the seriesManson was running second with the top four riders only separated by 8 points.
Manson's bike blew up in the penultimate round and he was forced to borrow fellow rider Joel Daniels' RMZ450 to compete in the final round.
Moving up from his YZF250cc to the bigger 450cc was obviously not a concern at all - he won three from three races in the veteran (30-39) class to take the trophy finishing on 316 points. Second place went to Ant Rountree (KXF450) with 295 points. Third, and first junior home, was Leroy Gwynn (8-12) on a Husqvarna 85cc with 287 points.
A mix-up when calculating points leading up to the final round had veteran Danny Willemsen as a clear leader in the Dirt Rider of the Year series, but once corrections were made the 48-year-old finished down the track.
