THE Braik House girls dominated the annual Wanganu City College Athletics Day at Cooks Gardens.

Head of physical education Gareth Wright said it was house against house, but the day also acted as a qualifying meeting for next Wednesday's Wanganui Secondary Schools athletics competition and the upcoming National Schools event.

Braik House chalked up 382 points, Rees House scored 323, Pirani House 321 and Alexander House 256.

The 14-16 age group Braik House girls dominated, producing 115 of the house's total. However, Tuesday Kahukura made a clean sweep of her events in the over-16 girls' competition, winning the long jump, 800m, 400m, 200m and 100m. Shaylee Winterburn also starred for Braik, taking the high, long and triple jump events in the 14-16 age group, while Erica Pomana did her bit for Braik by winning the javelin, shot and discus.

Tauira Smith arguably did best of the other athletes on Tuesday, winning the under-16 boys' 200m and the triple jump for Pirani House.

"No records were broken this year," Wright said yesterday. "Our strength probably is in the throwing events if anything, although a couple of our top throwers were not here ... Aaron Bacon won the javelin with a throw of 37 metres."

Wanganui City College are expected to battle for podium finishes at next Wednesday's Wanganui Inter-School competition with strong opposition from Collegiate and Wanganui High in particular.
